How to Read a Product Label

Five parts of a supplement label and what each one actually tells you. This is general information, not medical advice.

The product name

The large name on the front tells you what the product is marketed as. It is a name, not a measurement — a product named after one ingredient can contain several others, so always check the ingredient block too.

Net contents

Net contents state how much is in the package — for example, a count of caplets and a stated weight per caplet. A per-caplet weight is the weight of the whole caplet, not the amount of any single ingredient inside it.

The ingredient block

The ingredient list names what the product contains. Some labels state an amount per ingredient and some do not. If no amount is printed for an ingredient, the label does not tell you how much of it is inside.

Warnings and storage

Look for any warnings, usage directions and storage instructions printed on the package. If the print is too small to read on a photo, check the physical package itself.

Lot number and expiration date

These are usually printed or stamped near the bottom of the label or on the base of the container. Keep them when you contact support about a specific package.
